Born in Canton, China, Sing grew up in the 1950s in his parents’ small grocery shop in the Waltham Park Road neighborhood. When he was not learning in a classroom, he was behind the counter witnessing firsthand the grit and focus required for business ownership. His training continued when, at age fifteen, he left Kingston College and joined the ranks of the employed. Securing his first job and promotion at Joseph’s Department Store in the same week, his work ethic set him on a positive trajectory at Joseph’s and two of Jamaica’s food distributor giants following that: Hand Arnold, Ltd. and T. Geddes Grant. It was while at the latter that he earned his sales stripes for winning the account and approval of Lenn Happ’s legendary Carl Chang. The transition to business ownership finally came for Sing in 1971 when he briefly took over Havendale Store. Following his maiden venture, he opened Super Valu Supermarket in 1974, Manor Park Pharmacy in 1988, and Super Valu Home Centre in 1998. In April 2020, the founder and managing director of Super Valu Group of Companies will preside over the grand opening of his latest venture—Fresh Foods. A quiet philanthropist, he works closely with, among others, UWI’s dialysis centre.
